WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, Congressman Lance Gooden (R-Texas) sent a letter to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) condemning the agency’s lax oversight of tax-exempt organizations and demanding reforms to the financial reporting requirements for these groups.
The letter comes in response to several reports of corruption at a broad range of charitable organizations. Specifically, suspected Russian funding of U.S. climate groups, as well as Black Lives Matter’s utilization of donor funds to purchase multi-million-dollar mansions.
Rep. Lance Gooden said, “Black Lives Matter clearly misused donor funds and took advantage of well-intentioned Americans to the detriment of the communities they claim to serve. Non-profit groups hold significant sway in the U.S. and it’s time for Congress to take a serious look at bad actors abusing their tax-exempt status and the public’s trust. Taxpayers have a right to know how their donations are spent, and it’s time to expose these corrupt organizations.”
