WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, Congressman Lance Gooden introduced the Limiting Overreaching IRS Surveillance (LOIS) Act to prevent the Internal Revenue Service from collecting American citizens' biometric or geolocation data without consent or a warrant.
Last year, the Biden Administration announced individuals seeking to access the Child Tax Credit Portal and other IRS services are required to create an account with an identity verification company that utilizes facial recognition software. Given the IRS’s history of targeting taxpayers based on personal political beliefs, this poses a significant threat to Americans’ right to privacy.
Rep. Lance Gooden said, “The last thing the IRS needs is the ability to collect and store biometric data and track cellphones of American citizens. This is a recipe for disaster and would allow the Biden Administration to surveil Americans like never before.”
