Congressman Lance Gooden Refuses His Salary During Shutdown

“I stand by every family affected by this shutdown and hope that Democrats will come to the negotiating table in good faith.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Lance Gooden this week sent a letter to the Chief Administrative Officer of the United States Congress instructing him to withhold the Congressman’s salary until the shutdown has ended with the passage of a funding package signed by President Trump.

Congressman Gooden commented, “I asked the U.S. House of Representatives not to pay me while the government is shut down. While I believe that the Democrats need to step up to the negotiating table, I won’t accept any of my salary until we fully fund the government. It wouldn’t be fair to the tens of thousands of federal employees in my district if their representative received a paycheck while families are struggling with this shutdown.”

“I stand by every family affected by this shutdown and hope that Democrats will come to the negotiating table in good faith. President Trump has expressed willingness to compromise and meet in the middle - Democrats have not. I believe we can fund the government and the border wall, but nothing we do matters if our country is not secure.”
