Talking to Texans | Congressman Lance Gooden (R-TX)
In late July, I had the pleasure of hosting three town hall meetings to hear directly from the people who sent me to Washington. I’ve now held seven of these events across the 5th District and the results have been impressive. East Texans overwhelmingly support the conservative policies which are fueling our rapidly expanding economy and bringing unemployment in Texas to record lows.
Most recently in Rusk, Mabank, and Mesquite, attendees expressed their concerns on the border crisis, government spending, and providing care for our veterans. These are my highest priorities as well.
As a border state, Texans are acutely aware of the consequences of illegal immigration, as they place a heavy burden on our society and public institutions. I have personally authored and introduced legislation to fight child trafficking, reduce incentives for illegal immigration, and provide much-needed support for our law enforcement officers.
I voted NO on the recent budget deal passed by Congress as it increased the annual deficit to nearly $1 trillion, suspended the debt ceiling – our most useful tool to cut spending - and did nothing to reduce the risk of a future government shutdown. I didn’t go to Washington to rubber stamp Nancy Pelosi’s deals, only to come home and try to sell you on a bad deal.
Our VA facilities leave much to be desired, so I’ve cosponsored several bills to improve the scope and quality of care our vets receive. My staff and I are always available to help veterans in our community one-on-one as they deal with the VA and other government agencies.
I truly enjoy these town halls and appreciate everyone who took the time to participate. As a representative democracy, our system of government depends on robust debate and public discourse.
