A Trade Agenda for the Future | Congressman Lance Gooden (R-TX)

The fundamentals of our current economy are strong and stable enough to withstand a fight with our adversaries and emerge from the fight even stronger. As a result of deregulation, tax cuts, and a booming energy industry, our economy is finally growing at the rate it should. President Trump’s strategy to confront China is paying off. There is a massive trade deal with Canada and Mexico waiting to be signed, but Nancy Pelosi and her band of radicals are too busy impeaching the president and too stubborn to give him a win to make it official.

Our economy has regained its footing under the leadership of a Republican in the White House. After years of stagnant growth that followed the Great Recession, an economic plan focused on reducing taxes, regulation, and red tape has allowed our markets to grow again. This year we have seen the lowest unemployment rate in a half-century and an all-time high in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Thanks to the advent of natural gas and a regulatory framework that allows business to grow, our energy industry is leading the world in exports.

President Trump has renegotiated a free-trade deal with Canada and Mexico that will foster growth in each of our countries. When passed, this agreement would be a monumental victory for our farmers and ranchers in East Texas. Massive amounts of goods from Texas go to Canada and Mexico every year. That is why I have been working tirelessly with my colleagues to find a solution that will allow American industries to flourish. Additionally, the Trump Administration announced recently that a trade agreement with Japan is soon to be finalized. As Japan boasts of the largest economies in Asia, this agreement will have an extraordinary impact on our agricultural exports.

The Chinese have spent years undercutting our labor costs, stealing our intellectual property, and manipulating their currency to make it more favorable against the dollar. Their economy depends heavily on exports to American consumers. President Trump has made it clear that enough is enough.

If Democrats in Congress ever wake up and accept the results of the 2016 election, we will force the Chinese to address their unfair trade practices and sign several trade deals to boost our economy. America will be well-positioned to lead the world through the 21st century.
